Summer Schemes 2026: Bookings Open in May
Summer schemes for children aged 6 to 12 will run across the Borough from 20 July to 21 August, with bookings opening on Tuesday 19 May through Council's usual communication platforms.

Venues this year include Sixmile Leisure Centre in Ballyclare, Valley Leisure Centre, Ballyearl Arts and Leisure Centre, Lilian Bland, Merville House, Crumlin Leisure Centre, Hydepark, Ballynure, Kilbride Church/St Brides, and Castle Gardens.
Inclusive summer schemes in partnership with the Mae Murray Foundation will also run at two locations to be confirmed, offering specialised one-to-one care for children with additional needs.
A wider review of the summer scheme programme is planned for autumn and will be reported back to Members. Officers are also looking at whether an alternative booking system could be introduced following difficulties with the current one.
Antrim Town Put Forward for Best Kept Ireland Towns Award
Council has agreed to back the nomination of Antrim Town for the Best Kept Ireland Towns Awards 2026 in the "Best Kept Town" category.

The all-island competition brings together winners from Northern Ireland's Best Kept scheme and the Republic's Tidy Towns competition.
Judging takes place throughout May, with an awards ceremony planned for June at Farmleigh House in Dublin.

Do you know a young person who could use a little support to follow their interests or try something new?
The Duke of Edinburgh Legacy Bursary Scheme has relaunched in Antrim and Newtownabbey, offering local young people a chance to build skills, grow in confidence, and get help towards future goals.

The scheme is open to young people aged 11–18 and offers 20 bursaries worth £1,000 each.
Successful applicants will take part in a 12-week programme from September to December, covering areas such as volunteering, wellbeing, money management, sport, digital skills and creative activities.
Once the programme is completed, participants may be able to access funding to support their next steps.
This could include help with equipment, training or tuition linked to their interests.
The bursary is about more than money. It gives young people the chance to meet others, learn useful life skills and explore what they enjoy.
For some, it could be the boost they need to take on a new challenge or develop a talent.
Parents, carers, schools, youth groups and community organisations are encouraged to spread the word.
If there’s a young person in your life who could benefit, this could be a lovely opportunity to support them. Applications and nominations are now open.

Every week, we shine a light on one of the brilliant independent businesses that make our community what it is. The hidden gems, the passionate makers, and the hardworking locals who keep our high streets alive.
‘FROM A HOBBY TO A HAVEN’ MEET WHITEABBEY’S CRAFTING GEM
It all started with a missed dinner. Samantha Marshall was deep in a stitch count when her husband asked her to cook.
Her answer was no. His response? "You know that's a hobby, not a business."
Seven months later, The Yarn and Craft Emporium opened its doors in the heart of Whiteabbey Village and it hasn't looked back since.

Seven years on, this beloved independent is so much more than a wool shop. It's the only bespoke arts and crafts bookshop in the area, home to the largest local stock of Scheepjes Yarn, and a warm, welcoming space where makers of every level come to create, learn, and connect.
Alongside an impressive range of wool, acrylic and cotton from brands like West Yorkshire Spinners, Emma Ball and Lion Brand, Samantha and her team run a full programme of workshops and can even host craft parties for groups looking for something a little different.
What makes The Yarn and Craft Emporium truly special is the community at its heart.
Samantha is connected to the Knitting and Crochet Guild, involved in the Octopuses for Premmies charity project, and is becoming a tutor at both QUB and the Belfast Trust. The motto here says it all, kindness is always the answer.
Pop in Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, walk-ins are always welcome. You can also browse online, book a workshop, or drop Samantha an email at [email protected].
If this week's feature caught your eye, show them some love. Pay them a visit, spread the word, or give them a follow online.
